Top 10 Carrier Oils for Bulk Soap Making — Saponification Reference

You’re a CP/HP soap manufacturer, FMCG contract soap-maker, or artisan bar-soap brand sourcing in 25 kg drums to FCL. Different carrier oils give different bar properties — hardness, cleansing, conditioning, lather. Here’s the procurement-grade reference for the 10 highest-volume soap carrier oils we ship.

Soap saponification reference · Updated May 2026

Saponification values — the soap-maker’s most important number

The saponification value (SAP) is the milligrams of KOH (potassium hydroxide) required to saponify 1 gram of the oil. NaOH (sodium hydroxide) saponification works on a slightly different ratio. Soap calculators (SoapCalc, Bramble Berry, etc.) all use these values to compute lye quantity from oil quantity in your CP/HP recipe.

Oil SAP value (KOH) SAP value (NaOH) Hardness Lather
Coconut Oil 248–264 0.183 High Bubbly
Olive Oil 184–196 0.135 Medium Creamy, low
Palm Oil 196–205 0.142 High Stable
Castor Oil 176–187 0.129 Low Conditioning, boosts other lather
Sweet Almond Oil 188–200 0.140 Medium-low Stable, gentle
Jojoba Oil 85–98 0.069 Low (wax-ester) Conditioning
Sesame Oil 187–195 0.137 Medium-low Stable
Sunflower Oil 188–196 0.136 Low Conditioning, slow trace
Neem Oil 189–197 0.137 Medium Stable, anti-microbial note
Karanj Oil 185–195 0.135 Medium Stable, ayurveda-grade

The four CP/HP soap properties — and which oils drive each

Hardness

Driven by saturated fats. Coconut and palm are the soap-hardness workhorses. A 25–30% combined load gives you a hard, stable bar that doesn’t turn to mush in the soap dish.

Cleansing

Driven by short-chain saturated fats (lauric, myristic). Coconut oil is the cleansing workhorse — but high coconut percentages strip skin. Most CP/HP recipes cap coconut at 20–30%.

Conditioning

Driven by unsaturated fats (oleic, linoleic, ricinoleic). Olive, sweet almond, jojoba, sunflower, castor are the conditioning workhorses. A 50–70% load of olive-dominant unsaturated oils gives you a gentle, conditioning bar (the “Castile” archetype).

Lather

Bubbly lather comes from coconut. Stable, creamy lather comes from palm + sweet almond + sesame. Castor doesn’t drive lather directly but acts as a lather-booster for other oils.

Three classic CP soap recipe templates

The mass-market FMCG bar (high lather + hardness)

  • 30% Coconut Oil — cleansing + bubbly lather
  • 25% Palm Oil — hardness + stable lather
  • 30% Sunflower or Soybean — conditioning
  • 10% Castor Oil — lather boost
  • 5% Sweet Almond — conditioning

The Castile / olive-dominant bar (premium gentle)

  • 70% Olive Oil — conditioning backbone
  • 20% Coconut Oil — cleansing
  • 10% Castor Oil — lather boost

The ayurveda / Indian artisan bar (anti-microbial + premium)

  • 40% Olive Oil — conditioning
  • 20% Coconut Oil — cleansing
  • 15% Sweet Almond — gentle
  • 10% Neem Oil — anti-microbial
  • 10% Sesame Oil — ayurveda heritage
  • 5% Castor — lather boost

Fragrance load and essential-oil selection in soap

Most CP/HP recipes use 30–60g fragrance per kg of total oil weight. Common essential oils for soap fragrance:

  • Citronella + Lemongrass — mosquito-repellent / herbal positioning, bright citrus note
  • Eucalyptus globulus — sharp medicinal note, antiseptic positioning
  • Lavandin — workhorse soap-fragrance (lavender substitute at 30% the cost — full comparison)
  • Orange Oil — bright citrus, mass-market FMCG
  • Cedarwood Virginia — dry woody note, masculine positioning
  • Patchouli (dark) — earthy fixative for amber/oriental bar positioning

The procurement workflow for bulk soap makers

  1. Lock your CP/HP recipe (target soap qualities + fragrance)
  2. List the carrier oils + essential oils with monthly need
  3. Request 1–5 kg samples for new SKUs you haven’t qualified before
  4. Lock standard-tier pricing on 25 kg drums; wholesale-tier on 50 kg+; FCL on 16+ MT
  5. Reserve 6-month rolling capacity for repeat orders
Palm-free recipes: all our carrier oils are palm-free by default. If you’re positioning palm-free / RSPO-certified, your options are extensive across our catalogue. Note: we don’t supply palm or palm-kernel oil — we focus on the non-palm carrier portfolio.
