BULK ANTISEPTIC BUYER GUIDE

Tea Tree vs Eucalyptus Oil — Two Antiseptic Workhorses, Two Positions

Both are anti-microbial. Both are workhorses in soap, cosmetic, oral-care, scalp / hair, and pharma OTC. But the chemistry, skin-tolerance, and brand positioning are very different. The bulk buyer’s reference:

Tea Tree Oil

Melaleuca alternifolia · Premium antiseptic positioning

  • Terpinen-4-ol marker (≥30%, ISO 4730 reference)
  • Lower cineole (<15%) — gentler on skin
  • Australian-origin native species
  • Primary use: skincare, acne, scalp/hair, premium OTC
  • ISO 4730 + AS 2782 reference grades
  • Higher per-kg pricing band

Eucalyptus Globulus Oil

Eucalyptus globulus · Workhorse OTC + soap

  • 1,8-Cineole marker (70–85%)
  • Sharper, more penetrative aroma
  • Indian + Chinese high-volume production
  • Primary use: vapour rub, cough drop, mouthwash, soap
  • BP / Ph.Eur / USP-NF pharmacopoeia reference
  • Lowest per-kg in essential-oil category

Buyer FAQ

Which is cheaper per kg in bulk?
Eucalyptus globulus is significantly cheaper — typically 5–8x lower per kg than Tea Tree, driven by yield-per-hectare and species cultivation economics.

Can I substitute Tea Tree with Eucalyptus in a soap?
For “antiseptic” positioning yes — but the label claim and aroma profile shift. Most buyers don’t substitute when the finished product is positioned for Tea Tree specifically.

Pharmacopoeia grade — which one?
Eucalyptus globulus has BP / Ph.Eur / USP-NF monographs. Tea Tree doesn’t have a major pharmacopoeia monograph — it follows ISO 4730 (now superseded by ISO 4730:2017).

Australian origin Tea Tree — is yours genuine?
Yes — sourced from Australian Tea Tree Industry Association (ATTIA) registered growers. Origin certificate available per lot.

Minimum order?
1 kg sample → 5 kg pilot → 25 kg standard drum → 180 kg → FCL on either species.
