Steam-Distilled vs Solvent-Extracted (Absolute) Essential Oils
Two principal extraction methods produce two different commercial product forms. Steam distillation gives essential oils; solvent extraction gives concretes + absolutes. Same plant can produce both — different chemistry, different cosmetic / perfumery roles.
Steam-Distilled (Essential Oil)

- Better for thermal-stable plant materials
Solvent-Extracted (Absolute)
- Captures non-volatile + waxy fraction too
- Trace solvent residue (typically <10 ppm hexane)
- Viscous, deep-coloured (often red-brown)
- Premium fine perfumery role
- Higher yield per kg of plant material
- Better for delicate / heat-sensitive plants (jasmine, rose absolute)
When to choose what
Steam-distilled for
OTC pharma, cosmetic / aromatherapy retail, food flavour, mass-market F&F. Pharmacopoeia-graded SKUs.
Absolute for
Fine perfumery (especially florals like jasmine, rose, champaca), niche-perfumery dry-down, premium positioning.
Avoid absolute when
Cosmetic destination market requires zero-residual-solvent (some EU buyers); food-grade context.
Premium dual-supply
Many perfumers buy both for the same botanical — using essential oil for top + middle character and absolute for the base / fixative.

Buyer FAQ
Is one “more natural” than the other?
Both are natural-source plant extracts. Absolute uses food-grade solvent that is removed in the final stage. “Naturalness” arguments aside, both are widely accepted as natural perfumery materials.
Residual solvent ppm on absolute?
Typically <10 ppm hexane in cosmetic-grade absolute. Reported on COA. Pharma + food applications often demand <5 ppm.
Pricing difference?
Per-kg pricing depends on the plant + yield. Generally, absolutes command a premium but have lower bulk-buyer adoption due to viscosity + cost.
Can I substitute essential oil with absolute in a formula?
Not 1:1. Different volatility, different concentration of key markers, different colour. Reformulate when switching.
