Steam Distillation Explained — How Essential Oils Are Made (B2B Buyer’s Primer)

What steam distillation actually is

Steam distillation is the most widely-used method for producing essential oils — accounting for around 90% of all essential oil production globally. It is the technique behind lavender, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemongrass, sandalwood, rose otto, and most of the other oils your formulator likely buys in bulk.

The principle is simple: pass steam through plant material, vaporise the oil along with the water, condense the vapour, and separate the oil from the water by density.

The execution — temperature, pressure, time, plant load, water source, vessel material — is where craft separates a high-quality manufacturer from a re-packer.


The process, step by step

1. Plant material preparation. Fresh or dried plant material is loaded into a still. Pre-treatment breaks open the plant’s oil glands.

2. Steam generation. Steam is generated separately and piped into the still at the bottom. Pressure ranges from atmospheric (open-still) for delicate oils to 2–3 bar for tough botanicals. Lower pressure = gentler distillation = better chemical profile.

3. Vaporisation. Steam rises through the plant material. As it heats the plant cells, the essential oil’s volatile compounds vaporise.

4. Condensation. The steam–oil vapour exits the top of the still and enters a condenser — typically a coiled tube surrounded by cold water. The vapour condenses back to liquid: water + oil.

5. Separation. The liquid mixture flows into a Florentine flask (or separator). Most essential oils are less dense than water, so they float on top. They’re skimmed off; the water layer (“hydrosol”) is collected separately as a co-product.

6. Filtration & polishing. The collected oil is filtered to remove water droplets or plant debris, then often stored under nitrogen to prevent oxidation.


What separates a good distillation from a bad one

Time. Lavender oil distillation is typically 45–90 minutes. Patchouli is 8–12 hours. Sandalwood is 30+ hours. A re-packer cuts time to push more batches through — and produces oils with the wrong chemical profile.

Temperature & pressure. Higher pressure = faster distillation but lower-quality oil. The traditional “true” essential oil producers run low-pressure, slow distillation.

Water source. Hard water introduces minerals that degrade oil quality. RO water is the gold standard.

Still material. Copper for certain oils (especially rose); stainless steel as the modern industrial standard.

Plant load + cooling rate. Overfilling reduces yield. Slow condensation = better separation.

Questions to ask: still material? typical distillation time? pressure? do you separate fractions (heads/hearts/tails)? water source? A real manufacturer answers clearly. A re-packer changes the subject.


Why steam distillation isn’t used for everything

  • Jasmine, tuberose, narcissus — too delicate; use solvent extraction (“absolutes”).
  • Citrus oils — cold-pressed from peel.
  • Resins (frankincense, myrrh) — CO₂ or solvent extraction.
  • Heat-sensitive compounds — molecular distillation or CO₂.
