Spearmint vs Peppermint Oil — Two Mints, Two Marker Compounds, Two Roles

Spearmint and peppermint are both Mentha species, both essential to oral-care, gum, confectionery, pharma OTC. But they are chemically distinct — spearmint is L-carvone-dominant, peppermint is L-menthol-dominant. They are NOT interchangeable in finished-product positioning.

Spearmint Oil

Mentha spicata · L-Carvone-dominant

  • L-Carvone marker (≥55%, can reach 70%)
  • Sweet, herbal, “spearmint gum” character
  • No cooling sensation (unlike peppermint)
  • Primary use: spearmint gum, mouthwash, kid-positioned oral-care
  • FEMA + FCC food-grade default
  • Mid-tier pricing

Peppermint Oil

Mentha piperita · L-Menthol-dominant

  • L-Menthol marker (35–55%)
  • Cooling sensation — the defining peppermint property
  • Sharper, more “icy” character vs spearmint
  • Primary use: pharma OTC, toothpaste, peppermint gum, IBS pharma
  • BP / USP / IP / Ph.Eur monographs available
  • Mid-tier pricing

Buyer FAQ

Why does peppermint cool but spearmint does not?
L-menthol (the dominant compound in peppermint) activates the TRPM8 cold receptor on skin and tongue, creating the cooling sensation. L-carvone (in spearmint) does not activate this receptor.

Can I use peppermint where my recipe calls for spearmint?
No — the aroma profile and cooling sensation are completely different. Spearmint gum made with peppermint would taste like peppermint gum.

Pharmacopoeia-grade peppermint?
Yes — BP, USP, IP, Ph.Eur grades available. Confirm pharmacopoeia at PI stage.

Food-grade FCC for both?
Yes — both available in FCC / FEMA-listed grades for food and oral-care applications.

Minimum order?
1 kg sample → 5 kg pilot → 25 kg drum → 180 kg → FCL per species.
