BULK PREMIUM PERFUMERY GUIDE

Rose Otto vs Rose Absolute — Same Rose, Two Extraction Methods, Two Roles

Rose oil is one of the world’s most expensive natural materials. Two commercial forms — Rose Otto (steam-distilled essential oil) and Rose Absolute (solvent-extracted concrete-then-absolute). Same Rosa damascena or Rosa centifolia, but extraction method changes the chemistry, character, and price dramatically.

Rose Otto

Steam-distilled · Bulgarian / Indian Damask

  • Steam distillation; pale yellow liquid
  • Citronellol + Geraniol markers (40–60% combined)
  • Lower phenyl ethyl alcohol (<5%)
  • Fresh, lifted, “Bulgarian rose” character
  • Primary use: ultra-premium fine fragrance, classical aromatherapy
  • Highest per-kg pricing in essential oil category

Rose Absolute

Solvent-extracted · Bulgarian / Indian / Moroccan

  • Hexane extraction → concrete → ethanol absolute; deep red-orange
  • Phenyl ethyl alcohol marker (60–80%)
  • Lower citronellol/geraniol
  • Deeper, richer, more “honey-rose” character
  • Primary use: F&F compounding, niche perfumery, cosmetic
  • Premium pricing (lower than Otto)

When to choose what

Rose Otto for

Ultra-premium fine fragrance (Bvlgari Rose Essentielle, Diptyque Eau Rose), classical aromatherapy, attar tradition, ceremonial use.

Rose Absolute for

F&F compounding (most “rose” perfume bases use absolute), niche perfumery dry-down, cosmetic premium positioning, food flavour (FCC-grade).

Don’t conflate

Different extraction = different chemistry = different aroma profile. Rose Absolute can’t be labelled “Rose Otto” and vice-versa. Buyers in this category audit the difference.

Bulgarian vs Indian Damask

Bulgarian carries the heritage premium (Damask Valley). Indian Kannauj rose is gaining recognition. We supply both — origin declared per lot.

What ships consistently for both grades

Same rose; different downstream — same QC architecture:

  • GC-MS chromatogram per lot (citronellol/geraniol or PEA % reported)
  • NABL retain-sample testing
  • Origin certificate (Bulgarian / Moroccan / Indian)
  • Solvent-residue panel for Absolute (essential check)
  • IFRA conformance + allergen-23 declaration
  • Premium-tier sample sizes (100g, 500g, 1 kg) given high per-kg cost
  • Sample programme: paid, credit-back against bulk order in 60 days
  • In-house perfumer’s organoleptic sign-off on every premium lot

Buyer FAQ

Which is more expensive per kg?
Rose Otto — significantly. Steam distillation yields 0.02–0.04% rose oil from rose petals; absolute extraction yields 0.2–0.3%. The 10x yield gap drives the price gap.

Which is “more natural”?
Both are natural-source rose. Otto is steam-only; Absolute uses food-grade solvent (hexane) which is removed in the absolute stage. “Naturalness” arguments aside, both are recognised natural perfumery materials.

Bulgarian vs Indian Damask rose?
Same species (Rosa damascena), different terroir. Bulgarian carries the heritage premium; Indian Kannauj is gaining recognition and is more affordable. Premium fine perfumers blend both.

Solvent residue in Absolute?
Yes — hexane residue is typically <10 ppm in food/cosmetic-grade absolute. Reported on COA. Pharma + food applications demand <5 ppm.

Minimum order?
Otto — 100g, 500g, 1 kg, 5 kg increments (high cost per kg). Absolute — 100g, 500g, 1 kg, 5 kg, 25 kg increments.
