Comprehensive A–Z glossary of B2B procurement, regulatory, and aromatic-ingredient terminology. Cross-linked to relevant pages. Use this as a procurement-team reference when reviewing our COAs, paperwork packs, or compliance documentation.

A

Absolute

Solvent-extracted aromatic product (typically hexane → ethanol). Heavier, more viscous, deeper colour than steam-distilled essential oil. Premium fine perfumery role. See Rose Otto vs Absolute.

Aldehyde

Class of organic compound with –CHO group. Examples in F&F: citral, citronellal, vanillin, cinnamaldehyde. Often the “top note” character in compositions.

Allergen-23

EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 list of 23 fragrance allergens requiring declaration above threshold (0.001% leave-on / 0.01% rinse-off). Must be declared on cosmetic ingredient COA.

ANVISA

Brazil’s health regulator (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária). Regulates cosmetics + pharma + food. See ANVISA compliance pack.

Assay (GC)

The percentage of the target molecule in the material, measured by gas chromatography. Standard: ≥98% for F&F isolates, ≥99% for pharmacopoeia-grade.

B

Bacdanol

Synthetic sandalwood-substitute base note aromatic chemical. Sustainable alternative to natural Mysore sandalwood. See Sandalwood comparison.

Bergapten

Furocoumarin found in citrus bergamot. Photo-toxic on skin in sunlight. EU restricts to <0.001% in leave-on cosmetics. "FCF" bergamot is bergapten-removed. See Bergamot FCF vs Standard.

B/L (Bill of Lading)

Shipping document from the shipping line. Named consignee, port-of-loading, port-of-discharge, container number. Original B/L releases consignment at destination port.

BP (British Pharmacopoeia)

Pharmacopoeia compendium for UK + Commonwealth pharma. One of the major pharmacopoeia standards we ship aromatic ingredients against.

C

CAS Number

Chemical Abstracts Service registry number. Unique identifier per chemical substance. Required on COA + MSDS.

Carrier Oil

Triglyceride or wax-ester oil used as a base for essential oils + actives in finished cosmetic / massage product. Examples: jojoba, sweet almond, sesame, jojoba, castor.

CITES

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Some Atlas cedarwood + sandalwood populations are CITES-listed. Paperwork issued per consignment where required.

COA (Certificate of Analysis)

Per-lot QC report. SKU identity, lot number, physical + chemical parameters, GC assay, GC-MS chromatogram, analyst sign-off. Standard with every consignment.

Comedogenic Rating

0–5 scale measuring an oil’s tendency to clog pores. 0 = non-comedogenic; 5 = highly comedogenic. Face-care formulators target ≤2.

COSMOS

EU organic + natural cosmetic certification standard. Chain-of-custody back to organic-certified farm. Available as documentation on most SKUs with prior confirmation.

CPNP

Cosmetic Products Notification Portal — EU regulatory database for cosmetic ingredients sold in EU finished products.

D

DAP (Delivered At Place)

Incoterm. Seller handles all freight + insurance + delivery to buyer’s door. Buyer handles destination duties + taxes. See Incoterms primer.

D-Limonene

Cyclic monoterpene; bright citrus character; ex-orange peel cold-press. FEMA 2633. Citrus terpene workhorse.

Dihydromyrcenol

Saturated monoterpene alcohol; citrus-fresh, lime; masculine F&F + functional perfumery.

E

ECHA

European Chemicals Agency. Manages REACH registration database.

Enfleurage

Traditional cold-fat absorption method for delicate floral materials (jasmine, tuberose). Mostly replaced by solvent extraction.

Essential Oil

Steam-distilled or cold-pressed volatile aromatic extract from plant material. Sometimes called “volatile oil” or “ethereal oil”.

EXW (Ex-Works)

Incoterm. Buyer collects at our plant. Buyer arranges all transport + export customs + freight.

F

FCC (Food Chemicals Codex)

Purity standard for food-grade chemicals, published by USP. Tighter spec than industrial grade.

FCL (Full Container Load)

16–20 metric tonnes mixed-SKU container. Lowest per-kg pricing tier. Export-volume default.

FCF (Furocoumarin-Free)

Refers to bergamot oil with bergapten removed via molecular distillation. Safe for leave-on cosmetics.

FEMA

Flavor & Extract Manufacturers Association. Maintains list of GRAS food flavour ingredients. FEMA number is the unique identifier (e.g., D-Limonene = FEMA 2633).

FOB (Free On Board)

Incoterm. We deliver to port + handle export customs. Buyer’s freight forwarder takes over at the rail of the ship.

Fractional Distillation

Separation of mixed aromatic compounds into pure isolates by boiling-point. Used for terpineol ex-turpentine, citral ex-lemongrass, etc.

Furanocoumarin

Class of photo-toxic compounds found in some citrus oils. Restricted in EU leave-on cosmetics.

G

GC-MS Chromatogram

Gas chromatography + mass spectrometry analysis. Visualises the chemical composition of an aromatic ingredient. Industry-standard QC document. See how to read.

Geraniol

Acyclic monoterpene alcohol; sweet rose character. FEMA 2507. Rose accord backbone for F&F compounders.

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)

WHO standard for pharma production. We operate GMP-aware workflows; WHO-GMP available on specific pharma SKUs.

H

Halal

Islamic dietary + chain-of-custody compliance. Required for GCC + Indonesia + Malaysia cosmetic + food import. See SFDA/GCC halal pack.

HACCP

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. Food-safety management methodology. We are HACCP-compliant on food-grade lines.

HDPE

High-density polyethylene. Standard packaging material for aromatic ingredients (25 kg drum, 5 L can, 200 L drum).

I

IFRA

International Fragrance Association. Sets safety standards for fragrance ingredient usage in finished consumer products. Current standard: IFRA 50th amendment.

INCI

International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Standardised naming for cosmetic ingredient labels. Required on cosmetic-grade COA.

IP (Indian Pharmacopoeia)

Pharmacopoeia compendium for Indian pharma. Our domestic default for pharmacopoeia-graded aromatic ingredients.

Isolate

Single aromatic chemical extracted from a complex botanical or synthesised. Examples: Linalool, Geraniol, L-Menthol, Thymol. Workhorse F&F building blocks.

ISO 9001:2015

Quality management system certification. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified.

J

JP (Japanese Pharmacopoeia)

Pharmacopoeia compendium for Japanese pharma. Available on prior confirmation for select SKUs. See Japan / Korea compliance.

K

KFDA / MFDS

Korean Food and Drug Administration (now Ministry of Food and Drug Safety). Regulates cosmetic + pharma + food in Korea.

K-REACH

Korea’s chemical registration regulation, parallel to EU REACH but with Korea-specific requirements.

Kosher

Jewish dietary + chain-of-custody compliance. Available on select SKUs on prior confirmation.

L

L-Carvone / D-Carvone

Mirror-image isomers. L-Carvone (FEMA 2249) is spearmint character; D-Carvone (FEMA 2250) is caraway / dill character. Full comparison.

L-Menthol

Levo-isomer of menthol. The natural enantiomer found in Mentha. Has the cooling sensation. USP/BP/IP/JP pharmacopoeia-grade default.

Linalool

Acyclic terpene alcohol. Lily-of-valley floral character. FEMA 2635. The most widely-used aromatic chemical in F&F.

M

MoCRA

Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act. 2022 US legislation tightening cosmetic facility registration + adverse event reporting requirements. See FDA / MoCRA compliance.

Monograph

Pharmacopoeia chapter defining identity, purity, assay, and impurity limits for a specific pharma ingredient. Pharmacopoeia-grade COA references the relevant monograph.

MSDS / SDS

Material Safety Data Sheet / Safety Data Sheet. 16-section EU format. Ships with every consignment. See library.

MOQ

Minimum Order Quantity. Our ladder: 1 kg sample → 5 kg pilot → 10 kg trial → 25 kg standard drum → 50 kg → 180 kg → FCL container.

N

NABL

National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (India). Our retain-samples are NABL-tested by accredited third-party labs.

NCS (Natural Complex Substance)

REACH classification for essential oils + carrier oils. Different registration requirements than single-substance chemicals.

NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)

Standard with every buyer relationship. We never publish customer names on the website without explicit permission.

O

Oleoresin

Solvent extract including non-volatile + pungent compounds. Example: black pepper oleoresin contains piperine. Different from essential oil.

Optical Rotation

Physical measurement of chirality. Critical for distinguishing L vs D isomers (L-Menthol, L-Carvone, D-Carvone).

P

Patchoulol

Sesquiterpene alcohol; the dominant aromatic in patchouli oil. Iron-still distillation increases patchoulol content. See Patchouli Light vs Dark.

PEA (Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol)

Aromatic alcohol; rose-honey character. FEMA 2858. Fine-fragrance backbone for rose bases.

Pharmacopoeia

Country-specific reference book defining pharma-grade compound identity, purity, assay. Major standards: USP (US), BP (UK), IP (India), JP (Japan), Ph.Eur (Europe).

PI (Proforma Invoice)

Pre-shipment commercial document. Signed by both sides → triggers advance + production scheduling.

R

RBD

Refined-Bleached-Deodorised. Process applied to carrier oils to remove colour, odour, and impurities. Different from cold-pressed.

REACH

EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. Required for chemicals imported into EU above 1 tonne/year. See REACH compliance.

Retain Sample

Production-lot sample preserved under controlled conditions. Our policy: 36-month retain on every lot. Audit-traceable.

S

SFDA

Saudi Food and Drug Authority. Regulates cosmetic + pharma + food in Saudi Arabia + GCC. See SFDA / GCC compliance.

Steam Distillation

Classical extraction method. Steam carries volatile aromatic compounds out of plant material. Yields essential oil.

SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern)

REACH category for chemicals of particular regulatory concern. Status declared on COA.

T

Terpineol

Monoterpene alcohol; lilac-pine character. FEMA 3045. Workhorse soap + F&F + candle building block.

Thymol

Monoterpene phenol; oral-care antiseptic. USP / BP / Ph.Eur / FCC pharmacopoeia + food-grade available. See Thymol Crystal vs Liquid.

U

USP (United States Pharmacopoeia)

Pharmacopoeia compendium for US pharma. Defines pharmacopoeia-grade for menthol, thymol, eucalyptus, camphor, etc.

V

Vanillin

4-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde. Synthetic or natural-identical vanilla character. FEMA 3107. See Vanilla vs Vanillin.

Vetiver

Vetiveria zizanioides / Chrysopogon zizanioides. Premium base-note essential oil. Origins: Haitian, Javanese, Bourbon (Réunion), Indian khus. See Vetiver 3-way.

Y

Yield

Percentage of essential oil obtained from kilogram of plant material. Steam distillation typical: 0.02–2%. Highly species-dependent.
