Patchouli Light vs Patchouli Dark — Same Plant, Two Workflows, Two Perfumery Roles
“Patchouli light” and “patchouli dark” come from the same plant (Pogostemon cablin). The difference is in distillation equipment and age: light is fresh-distilled in stainless steel, dark is iron-distilled and aged. Bulk perfumery buyers choose differently depending on whether they need a top-note brightness or a base-note depth.
Patchouli Light
- Pale amber colour, lower viscosity
- Patchoulol content: 28–35%
- Brighter, top-end character — less “earthy”
- Best for: modern niche perfumery, premium aromatherapy, light-weight blends
- Younger material — minimal aging in stock
- Higher per-kg cost (premium tier)
Patchouli Dark
- Deep brown-amber, higher viscosity
- Patchoulol content: 30–40% (iron-still concentrates)
- Heavier, classical patchouli character — earthy, balsamic
- Best for: oriental fragrance bases, fine perfumery base notes, mass-market F&F
- Aged 1–3 years for full development
- Workhorse pricing tier

When to choose what
Light for
Modern niche fragrance ateliers, premium aromatherapy diffuser blends, ayurveda lighter wellness positioning, fragrance training references.
Dark for
Oriental / amber / chypre base accords, mass-market F&F bases, candle and bar-soap fragrance, classical Indian attar work.
Mix for
A blended base accord that has both brightness and depth — many perfumers buy both and proportion 30/70 or 40/60 themselves.
Iron-still vs SS
Iron stills add trace metal-ion catalysis that develops the classical earthy notes. SS keeps the oil “cleaner.” This is the chemistry of the choice.
What ships consistently across both grades
Same source plant; identical paperwork; different distillation workflows:
- GC-MS chromatogram per lot (patchoulol % reported)
- NABL retain-sample testing
- Origin certificate (Indonesia / Indian-grown)
- Iron-still vs SS-still origin declared on COA
- 25 kg / drum / FCL packaging
- Aging duration disclosed for dark grade
- Sample programme: paid, credit-back against bulk order in 60 days
Buyer FAQ
Q: Which contains more patchoulol?
Iron-still dark patchouli typically tests 2–5 percentage points higher in patchoulol due to thermal isomerisation during distillation in iron equipment. The aroma difference is bigger than the analytical difference.
Q: Can I age light to make dark?
Partial conversion — aging light in iron drums for 18–36 months will deepen colour and shift profile toward dark, but the metal-ion catalysis of iron-still distillation cannot be perfectly replicated.
Q: Which has the better perfumery fixative property?
Both are excellent fixatives. Dark is the classical fine-perfumery fixative for amber/oriental bases. Light works better in modern lighter compositions where heaviness isn’t wanted.
Q: Origin — Indonesian or Indian?
Most premium-grade patchouli originates from Indonesia (Sulawesi). Indian production has grown — we source from both. Origin declared on every COA.
Q: Minimum order?
25 kg HDPE entry. Drum + FCL pricing on /pricing-tiers/.
