How to Choose the Right Carrier Oil for Cosmetic Formulation
A bulk-buyer’s reference guide to selecting carrier oils for cosmetic, body care and hair care formulations — covering comedogenic rating, fatty acid profile, shelf life, organoleptic, regulatory compliance and unit economics. Pick the wrong carrier and your finished product fails on stability, on rack life, or on positioning.
The eight carrier oils that account for ~95% of cosmetic formulation
Across our customer base of cosmetic OEMs, D2C founders and ayurveda formulators, eight carrier oils handle the overwhelming majority of formulation work. Each has a distinct chemistry and a different best-use case:
| Oil | Comedogenic | Shelf life | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jojoba | 2 | ~5 years | Premium face oils, sebum-balancing, mature skin |
| Sweet Almond | 2 | 12–24 months | Body care, massage, baby products, mass cosmetic |
| Sesame | 2–3 | 12–18 months | Ayurveda tailams, warming carrier, body therapy |
| Olive | 2 | 18–24 months | Mature skin, soap base, ayurveda preparations |
| Neem | 1–2 | 12 months | Anti-microbial actives, hair scalp, ayurveda |
| Karanj | 2 | 12 months | Anti-fungal, hair oil, ayurveda preparations |
| Castor | 1 | 24 months | Hair growth claims, eyelash serums, deep penetrator |
| Vitamin E (tocopherol) | n/a | 24 months | Antioxidant additive — not a base carrier |
How comedogenic rating works in formulation
Comedogenic rating runs 0–5. 0 means an oil is non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores under normal use); 5 means highly comedogenic. For face-care formulations, formulators generally stay at or below 2. For body-care, hair-care, soap and massage applications, the rating matters less. Note: rating is empirically determined and varies by skin type, but in B2B bulk procurement it’s the standard reference number that travels with the carrier oil.
Why shelf life matters in B2B bulk purchasing
You buy 200 kg of a carrier oil. You blend 40 kg into your finished cosmetic product on day 30. The remaining 160 kg sits in your warehouse. If that oil has a 12-month shelf life and you’re not blending fast enough, you may oxidise the stock. Two procurement implications:
- Match shelf life to consumption rate. Sweet almond cold-pressed has a 12–15 month shelf life. If you blend 200 kg over 6 months, you’re fine. If you blend over 18 months, switch to refined (RBD) or jojoba.
- Add Vitamin E to extend. 0.5–1% mixed tocopherol added to your carrier oil extends shelf life 30–60%. This is one of the most common antioxidant interventions in cosmetic formulation.
Refined vs cold-pressed — the choice that affects your label
RBD (refined-bleached-deodorised) sweet almond is colourless, near-odourless, has the longer shelf life, and is the workhorse mass-market cosmetic carrier. Cold-pressed sweet almond retains the full vitamin E and phytosterol load, has a light golden colour and a mild nutty aroma, has a shorter shelf life, and is the “clean beauty” or organic-equivalent grade. Where carrier oils enter your cost-per-unit math
In a face-oil formulation, the carrier accounts for 75–95% of the volume. That means your per-kg carrier oil cost is your raw-material cost. Switching from jojoba to sweet almond on a 500 unit/month face oil halves your raw-material cost — but changes the product positioning, shelf life and likely your retail price point too.
Regulatory pack to ask for
- COA with fatty acid profile + peroxide value + free fatty acid + vitamin E quantification
- Origin certificate — country of origin matters for COSMOS / NOP / IBD certification
- Allergen declaration — nut-source allergen on sweet almond, walnut, hazelnut grades
- Pesticide residue panel on request (organic-positioned grades)
- Heavy-metals panel if you’re positioning for export to EU / Japan
The procurement workflow we recommend
- List the carrier(s) your formulation needs across 6 months
- Request a 1 kg sample of each — paid, credit-back at bulk PI
- Run your in-house formulation — typical buyer-side lead time 1–4 weeks
- Lock the tier pricing at 25 kg / 50 kg / 180 kg drum / FCL depending on monthly need
- Reserve capacity for repeat-volume needs via our 6-month rolling planner
