BULK PERFUMERY & WELLNESS GUIDE

Frankincense — Serrata vs Carteri vs Sacra — Three Boswellia Species, Three Markets

Frankincense (“Olibanum”) is a resin from Boswellia trees. Multiple species; multiple commercial heavy-hitters. Serrata (Indian), Carteri (Somalia / East Africa), Sacra (Oman). Each has a distinct chemistry, regional supply chain, and perfumery / wellness role.

Boswellia Serrata

Indian Olibanum · Ayurveda + anti-inflammatory

  • Origin: Indian dry deciduous forest
  • Key markers: boswellic acids (anti-inflammatory)
  • High alpha-thujene, alpha-pinene; lower octyl acetate
  • Primary use: ayurveda, joint-care nutraceutical, premium aromatherapy
  • Indian source — most cost-efficient globally
  • Lower CITES sensitivity than other species

Boswellia Carteri

Somali Olibanum · Classical perfumery

  • Origin: Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan
  • Key markers: octyl acetate, alpha-pinene, limonene
  • Classical “frankincense” aroma — warm, balsamic, citrus-resin
  • Primary use: fine perfumery, premium incense, religious / liturgical
  • Most internationally recognised frankincense
  • Higher per-kg pricing — supply-chain complexity

Boswellia Sacra

Omani Hojari · Premium fine perfumery

  • Origin: Oman (Dhofar region) — Hojari grade
  • Key markers: incensole acetate (rare), high pinenes
  • Most premium frankincense — limited supply
  • Primary use: niche fine perfumery, premium spa, niche aromatherapy
  • CITES-aware sourcing
  • Premium-tier pricing

When to choose what

Serrata for

Ayurveda formulations, joint-care nutraceutical (boswellic acid extracts), premium aromatherapy with anti-inflammatory positioning.

Carteri for

Classical fine fragrance, premium incense / candle, religious / liturgical use, mid-premium aromatherapy retail.

Sacra for

Niche fine perfumery ateliers, ultra-premium spa amenity, niche aromatherapy retail at top-tier price-point.

Cost substitution

Serrata is the most cost-efficient option when boswellic-acid anti-inflammatory positioning is the goal. Carteri-style aroma can be matched with Carteri + small Sacra blend.

What ships consistently across all three

Same QC architecture; only origin + chemistry vary:

  • GC-MS chromatogram per lot (key marker compounds reported)

  • CITES paperwork where applicable
  • Resin form: tears + oil + absolute available
  • 1 kg sample → 25 kg drum → 180 kg → FCL ladder

Buyer FAQ

Which has the highest boswellic acid content?
Serrata — by a wide margin. Carteri and Sacra are lower in boswellic acid but higher in characteristic aromatic compounds.

Is Serrata frankincense as “real” as Carteri?
Yes — Serrata is a true Boswellia species, used in Indian Ayurveda for thousands of years. The Carteri-bias in Western perfumery is cultural / historical, not biological.

CITES — which species are restricted?
Some Boswellia populations (notably Sacra in Oman) face supply-chain sustainability concerns. We source from CITES-compliant channels and document accordingly.

Resin tears vs essential oil — which to buy?
Both are available. Tears are used for incense and traditional formulations; essential oil is for cosmetic, aromatherapy, and F&F formulation. Confirm form at PI stage.

Minimum order?
1 kg essential oil sample → 5 kg pilot → 25 kg drum → 180 kg → FCL per species.
