Eucalyptus Globulus vs Radiata vs Citriodora — Three Species, Three Industries
The eucalyptus genus has 700+ species. Only three carry serious commercial bulk weight: globulus (the cineole workhorse), radiata (the pharma-gentle alternative), and citriodora (the citronellal repellent species). They are not interchangeable. The bulk buyer’s reference:
E. Globulus
- 1,8-Cineole content: 70–85%
- BP / Ph.Eur / USP-NF pharmacopoeia reference
- Sharp, penetrative aroma — classic eucalyptus
- Primary use: vapour rubs, cough drops, mouthwash, soap
- Indian high-volume production — most cost-efficient
- Skin irritation potential: higher (cineole-dominant)
E. Radiata
- 1,8-Cineole content: 60–75% — lower than globulus
- Softer, less harsh aroma — child / sensitive-skin use
- Aromatherapy aspirational positioning
- Primary use: gentle vapour rubs, pediatric / wellness, premium aromatherapy
- Per-kg cost higher than globulus
- Skin irritation potential: lower than globulus
E. Citriodora
- Citronellal content: 65–85% (lemon-eucalyptus character)
- Almost no 1,8-cineole — chemotype is completely different
- Primary use: mosquito repellent (CDC-recognised feedstock), candle, F&F citrus note
- Not interchangeable with globulus / radiata at all
- Indian production strong — cost-efficient
- Skin: PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) precursor source

When to choose what
Globulus for
OTC vapour rubs (e.g. Vicks-style), cough drops, mouthwash, antiseptic soap, industrial cleaning, mass-market cosmetic.
Radiata for
Pediatric vapour rubs, gentle aromatherapy diffuser blends, premium spa amenities, sensitive-skin wellness products.
Citriodora for
Mosquito-repellent candles & sprays, PMD-source feedstock, citrus-note F&F compounds, outdoor-pet products.
Don’t mix-and-match because
Globulus and citriodora are completely different chemotypes. A buyer expecting cineole who receives citronellal-dominant material will reject the consignment.
What’s common across all three eucalyptus species from our plant
Same QC architecture, same paperwork, same lead time:
- GC-MS chromatogram per lot (cineole or citronellal % reported)
- NABL third-party retain testing
- BP / Ph.Eur / USP grade available where pharmacopoeia exists (globulus)
- 25 kg HDPE / 180–200 kg MS drum / FCL container
- Sample programme: paid, credit-back against bulk order in 60 days
- Indian-origin advantage — most cost-competitive globally
- REACH / IFRA / allergen / SDS pack
Buyer FAQ
Q: Which eucalyptus is cheapest per kg?
Globulus is consistently the lowest per kg, driven by Indian and Chinese volume. Citriodora is similar. Radiata commands a 25–60% premium due to lower yield and aromatherapy positioning.
Q: Can I substitute radiata for globulus to get the “gentler” claim?
Many pediatric and aromatherapy brands do exactly this. Be aware that the cineole content drops 10–15 percentage points, which changes the OTC efficacy claim.
Q: Is citriodora the same as “lemon eucalyptus”?
Yes. Citriodora has been re-classified taxonomically as Corymbia citriodora but trade nomenclature still calls it Eucalyptus citriodora. The CDC recognises PMD derived from this species for mosquito repellency.
Q: Do you supply pharmacopoeia-grade globulus?
Yes — BP, Ph.Eur, USP grades available. Confirm pharmacopoeia at PI stage. Full pharmacopoeia-compliant COA included.
Q: Minimum order?
25 kg per SKU per chemotype. Drum & FCL tiers most economical.
