This is the working list we recommend to every new cosmetic formulator. Ordered by stock priority, not alphabet.
1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Function: universal calming / floral / hero ingredient for sleep, anti-stress, skincare. INCI: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil. Allergens: linalool, geraniol — both on EU 26-allergen list. Pricing tier: mid. Indian Kashmir/HP-grown competes with Bulgarian and French. Buy this first.
2. Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Function: cooling, energising, foot care, oral care. INCI: Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil. Allergens: limonene, linalool. Pricing tier: low. India is a major producer.
3. Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Function: antimicrobial, acne, scalp care. INCI: Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil. ISO 4730 spec critical: terpinen-4-ol >30%, 1,8-cineole <15%. Pricing tier: mid-high. Australian is premium; Indian-grown increasingly competitive.
4. Eucalyptus globulus
Function: respiratory, fresh/clean scent, foot care. Key marker: 1,8-cineole >70%. Pricing tier: low.
5. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
Function: uplifting, deodorising, insect-repellent. Citral content (geranial + neral) >75% for quality. Pricing tier: very low — India is the world’s largest exporter.
6. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Function: hair growth, scalp care, antioxidant. Chemotype matters: specify cineole CT, camphor CT, or verbenone CT depending on application. Pricing tier: mid.
7. Sandalwood (Santalum album)
Function: premium floral/woody base note, anti-inflammatory skincare. ISO 3518: α-santalol >41%, β-santalol >16%. Pricing tier: very high. Indian sandalwood is the original. Specialty oil — request COA every batch.
8. Frankincense (Boswellia serrata or B. carterii)
Function: premium skincare, anti-aging, meditation/wellness. INCI: Boswellia Serrata Resin Oil (Indian) or Boswellia Carterii Oil (Somali). Pricing tier: mid-high.
9. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Function: rose-substitute floral, skin-balancing. Allergens: geraniol, citronellol, linalool. Pricing tier: mid.
10. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Function: premium floral, sensual/mood/hair. Fractions matter: Extra is the lightest top note; Complete is the full distillate. Specify on RFQ. Pricing tier: mid-high.
