Essential Oil vs Oleoresin — Two Different Plant Extracts, Two Markets
Same plant source can produce two commercially distinct products. Essential oil = volatile distillate (steam-distilled). Oleoresin = solvent extract including non-volatile + pungent compounds (capsaicin, piperine, gingerol). They serve different industries.
Essential Oil

Oleoresin

- Contains capsaicin (chilli), piperine (pepper), gingerol (ginger), curcumin trace (turmeric)
- Used for: food flavour, nutraceutical, savoury seasoning
- Standardised by pungency / colour value
- Viscous, deep-coloured, higher concentration
When to choose what
Essential oil for
F&F compounding, aromatherapy, cosmetic, soap, premium perfumery applications.
Oleoresin for
Food flavour (pizza seasoning, curry compounds, beverage), nutraceutical capsule (turmeric oleoresin → curcuminoid extract), savoury seasoning, hot sauce concentrate.
Both for
