Carrier oils are the unsung heroes of personal-care formulation. Essential oils get the marketing, but it’s the carrier oil that determines feel, absorption, shelf life and 80% of the product’s actual cost.
What “cold-pressed” actually means
Cold pressing is mechanical extraction at low temperature (under 50°C). Seeds, kernels or fruit are crushed in a screw press; the oil flows out. No solvents, no heat that destroys delicate compounds, no chemical refining.
Refined carrier oils go through high-heat solvent extraction (hexane) followed by bleaching and deodorising. Cheaper, more shelf-stable, but lost most bioactive compounds. For natural/clean-beauty brands, cold-pressed is the only credible option.
The 9 carrier oils worth knowing
1. Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)
Technically a liquid wax. Closest to human sebum. Doesn’t go rancid (5+ year shelf life). Best for: facial oils, serums, anti-aging, scalp. MOQ: 5 kg. Price: mid-high (USD 25–40/kg).
2. Argan (Argania spinosa)
Real merit + marketing. High vitamin E, omega-9. Best for: hair masks, facial serums, anti-aging. MOQ: 5 kg. Price: high (USD 35–60/kg). Morocco is original.
3. Sweet Almond (Prunus amygdalus dulcis)
Workhorse carrier. Light, mild. Best for: body oils, baby products, massage. MOQ: 5 kg. Price: mid (USD 12–20/kg). Real cold-pressed is significantly more expensive than “refined” sweet almond.
4. Coconut (Cocos nucifera)
Two grades: cosmetic-grade (RBD) and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). VCO has more skin-active compounds + coconut aroma; RBD is neutral. MOQ: 25 kg. Price: low-mid (USD 5–10/kg). Indian VCO from Kerala is excellent.
5. Sesame (Sesamum indicum)
Ayurvedic favourite. Light grade more neutral; dark grade more aromatic. MOQ: 25 kg. Price: low (USD 6–12/kg). India = world’s largest producer.
6. Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera)
Light, fast-absorbing, high linoleic. Best for: facial oils, oily-hair products. MOQ: 25 kg. Price: low-mid (USD 8–15/kg). Shelf life shorter: 12–18 months. Rotate stock.
7. Rosehip (Rosa canina or Rosa mosqueta)
High linoleic acid + retinoic acid precursors. Best for: facial serums, scar/stretch-mark products. MOQ: 5 kg. Price: mid-high (USD 30–50/kg). Shelf life: 6–12 months once opened. Store cold.
8. Avocado (Persea americana)
Rich, slow-absorbing, vitamin-A rich. Best for: dry-skin, hair masks. MOQ: 5 kg. Price: mid (USD 15–25/kg). Cold-pressed unrefined is dark green; refined is pale yellow.
9. Castor (Ricinus communis)
Thick, viscous, hair-care icon. Best for: hair, lip balms, soap. MOQ: 25 kg. Price: very low (USD 4–8/kg). India is the dominant producer.
What to ask your supplier
- Cold-pressed or refined?
- Fatty acid profile (linoleic / oleic / palmitic percentages)?
- Country of origin?
- Peroxide value (<10)?
- Acid value (<2 mg KOH/g)?
- Shelf life from bottling date?
- Packaging (light-blocking for vitamin-E rich oils)?
Storage and handling
Store cool, dark (under 20°C). Don’t open until needed. Use within shelf-life half once opened. Add 0.5% vitamin E (tocopherol) on decanting for oxidation protection. FIFO inventory rotation.
