BULK CAMPHOR BUYER GUIDE

Bhimseni Camphor vs Synthetic Camphor — Two Camphor Sources, Two Markets

Camphor is one of India’s most ceremonially important materials — and one of its highest-volume industrial chemicals. The two commercial grades are Bhimseni (natural-source, Borneo / Dryobalanops resin) and synthetic (ex-turpentine alpha-pinene route). They sit in very different price brackets and serve very different applications.

Bhimseni Camphor

Natural Borneo / Dryobalanops source · Premium pooja

  • Natural extraction from Dryobalanops aromatica resin
  • Distinctive cool, fresh, “sacred” character
  • Used in Indian pooja / ceremonial / dharmic applications
  • Burns cleanly without leaving residue (key for ceremonial use)
  • Limited supply (resin tree-tap harvested)
  • Premium pricing — 5–8x synthetic

Synthetic Camphor

Ex-alpha-pinene · USP/BP/IP industrial workhorse

  • Synthesised from alpha-pinene (ex-turpentine)
  • Same molecular structure as natural; full pharmacopoeia compliance
  • USP / BP / IP / Ph.Eur grades available
  • Primary use: pharma OTC (vapour rub, topical analgesic), industrial moth-balls (naphthalene replacement), F&F
  • High-volume Indian + Chinese production
  • Workhorse pricing

When to choose what

Bhimseni Camphor for

Pooja / ceremonial / dharmic applications, traditional Indian temple supplies, premium incense, traditional pancha-gavya formulations.

Synthetic Camphor (USP / IP) for

Pharma OTC (vapour rub, topical analgesic, cough syrup), industrial moth-balls / pest-repellent, F&F masking, traditional formulations where ceremonial-grade isn’t required.

Don’t substitute Bhimseni for ceremonial

Synthetic camphor leaves residue when burned; this is precisely why ceremonial use requires Bhimseni. Buyers who substitute risk product complaint.

IP-grade for Indian pharma

Synthetic camphor IP-grade is the default for Indian pharma. BP / USP / Ph.Eur on confirmation.

What ships consistently for both grades

Both ship from the same Delhi-NCR facility with same QC architecture:

  • Identity verification (FTIR + GC profile)
  • NABL retain-sample testing
  • USP / BP / IP / Ph.Eur grade for synthetic (with monograph reference)
  • Origin certificate (Bhimseni — Indonesia / Sumatra; synthetic — India)
  • Burning-test reference for ceremonial-grade Bhimseni
  • 1 kg sample → 25 kg fibre drum → 180 kg → FCL ladder
  • Sample programme: paid, credit-back against bulk order in 60 days

Buyer FAQ

Why does Bhimseni cost so much more?
Natural extraction from Dryobalanops aromatica tree resin is supply-constrained. Tree tap-harvest is slow and seasonal. The ceremonial-grade clean-burning property cannot be matched by synthetic routes.

Is synthetic camphor “real” camphor?
Yes — same molecule, same molecular structure, same physical properties. Synthetic camphor is the standard pharmacopoeia-grade material globally. The difference between natural and synthetic is the source and the trace-impurity profile.

Can I use synthetic camphor for pooja?
Technically yes — but traditional ceremonial use specifies Bhimseni because of the clean-burning property. Most temple supply chains specify Bhimseni explicitly.

IP-grade camphor for Indian pharma?
Yes — synthetic camphor IP-grade is the Indian pharma default. Used in vapour rubs, topical analgesics, cough preparations. We can supply with full IP monograph compliance.

Minimum order?
Synthetic — 1 kg sample → 25 kg fibre drum → 180 kg drum → FCL. Bhimseni — premium-tier minimums (typically 5 kg) due to higher cost.
