Aromatic Chemicals Glossary for Procurement Managers
You’re a procurement manager at a fragrance house, cosmetic OEM, or pharma company. The R&D team sends you a buy list with 40 aromatic chemicals on it. You need to source efficiently — knowing what each molecule does in formulation, what assay grade is standard, what pricing band to expect, and which compliance certifications matter. Linalool
Family: Acyclic terpene alcohol · Standard assay: 95–98% GC · FEMA: 2635 · Organoleptic: floral, lily-of-valley, slightly woody. Use: universal in fine fragrance, personal care, soap. Pricing band: workhorse. Sourcing note: natural-origin (ex-rosewood or ex-Ho-leaf) commands a premium; synthetic-route is the F&F default.
Geraniol
Family: Acyclic monoterpene alcohol · Standard assay: 95–98% GC · FEMA: 2507 · Organoleptic: sweet rose, geranium, floral-citrus. Use: rose/floral fragrance bases, soap, F&F, mosquito repellent. Pricing band: workhorse. Sourcing note: natural-origin from palmarosa or citronella; synthetic-route also widely used.
Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol (PEA)
Family: Aromatic alcohol · Standard assay: 99% GC · FEMA: 2858 · Organoleptic: rose, honey, mild floral. Use: fine fragrance backbone, personal care, cosmetic. Pricing band: mid-workhorse. Sourcing note: almost always synthetic-route from styrene oxide hydrogenation.
Terpineol
Family: Monoterpene alcohol (alpha/beta/gamma mix or pure alpha) · Standard assay: 95–98% GC · FEMA: 3045 · Organoleptic: lilac, pine, soft floral. Use: soap, F&F, candle, masking. Pricing band: workhorse. Sourcing note: ex-turpentine processing; we make this on-site.
Eugenol

Citronellol
Family: Acyclic monoterpene alcohol (rho- isomer common in F&F) · Standard assay: 95–98% GC · Organoleptic: rose-citronella, floral, slightly sweet. Use: rose-floral compounding, personal care, repellent (citronellal precursor route). Pricing band: workhorse.
D-Limonene

L-Carvone vs D-Carvone

Bacdanol (sandalwood substitute)
Family: Synthetic sesquiterpene aldehyde · Standard assay: 95–98% GC · Organoleptic: sandalwood, woody, creamy. Use: F&F bases as sandalwood-substitute. Pricing band: premium. Sourcing note: sustainable Atlas / Mysore-core sandalwood substitute; growing demand globally.
Dihydromyrcenol
Family: Saturated monoterpene alcohol · Standard assay: 98% GC · Organoleptic: citrus-fresh, lime, masculine-fragrance signature. Use: men’s fine fragrance, functional / soap, F&F.
Menthol Crystals (L-Menthol)
Family: Cyclic monoterpene alcohol (L-isomer) · Standard assay: ≥99.5% (USP/BP/IP/JP) · Organoleptic: cooling, fresh mint. Use: pharma vapour-rub, oral-care, F&F. Pricing band: workhorse. Sourcing note: ex-Mentha arvensis or synthetic-route; pharmacopoeia-compliant default.
Thymol Crystals
Family: Monoterpene phenol · Standard assay: ≥99% (USP/BP/Ph.Eur/FCC) · Organoleptic: herbal, slightly phenolic. Use: oral-care antiseptic, pharma topical, plate-count agar. Pricing band: mid-tier.
What “GC assay” really means at procurement scale
GC (gas chromatography) assay is the percentage of the target molecule in the bulk material. A 98% GC Linalool is 98% Linalool; the remaining 2% is dehydrolinalool / cis-trans isomers / other related impurities. For most F&F applications, 95–98% is the workhorse grade. For pharma applications, higher purity (≥99% or ≥99.5%) is the pharmacopoeia-mandated grade. Always confirm GC assay at PI stage — never assume.
The other parameter that travels with every aromatic chemical
Optical rotation matters on chiral molecules (L-Menthol, L-Carvone, D-Carvone, optically-active terpenes). It’s the only QC parameter that reliably distinguishes between mirror-image isomers. Make sure your COA reports it on chiral molecules.

What “manufacturer-direct” means in practice
The aromatic chemicals trade has 3 layers: producer (plant) → trader (broker / re-seller) → buyer (you). Each layer typically adds 15–25% markup. Buying manufacturer-direct cuts the trader layer, saves 25–50%, and removes risk of “blended” material (where a trader mixes two lots from two upstream sources, breaking your COA / chromatogram consistency).
