Blending principles for diffuser + retail product

Top notes (light, evaporative, first impression)

Lemon, bergamot, peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus oils. These give the immediate “what is this?” character. Typically 20–40% of a blend.

Middle notes (body, the heart of the blend)

Lavender, geranium, rosemary, tea tree, ylang-ylang. The dominant character. Typically 40–60% of a blend.

Base notes (depth, fixative, lingering)

Frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver. The lingering dry-down. Typically 10–30%.

Dilution rates for retail aromatherapy product

  • Diffuser blend (water-based): 5–10 drops essential oil per 100 ml water
  • Body / massage oil: 1–3% essential oil in carrier (jojoba, sweet almond, sesame)
  • Bath salt / scrub: 0.5–1% essential oil by weight
  • Soap: 30–60 g essential oil per kg total oil weight
  • Candle (soy/coconut wax): 6–10% by weight (≤10% before flame issues)
  • Roll-on perfume: 15–25% essential oil in carrier (jojoba is most stable)

Premium vs workhorse grade — when each makes sense

For each oil category, you usually have a “premium” option and a “workhorse” alternative:

  • Lavender (true) vs Lavandin — premium fine fragrance / clinical-aromatherapy vs spa-amenity workhorse
  • Eucalyptus radiata vs globulus — wellness-positioned vs pharma OTC workhorse
  • Atlas Cedarwood vs Virginia vs Himalayan — fine fragrance vs soap-workhorse vs ayurveda-premium alternative
  • Sandalwood (Mysore-core) vs Bacdanol — premium attar vs sustainable substitute
  • Patchouli light vs dark — modern niche vs classical fine perfumery

Paperwork to demand for aromatherapy positioning

  • COA + GC-MS chromatogram per lot — proves the chemotype + chemistry
  • Origin certificate — country of origin matters for premium positioning (Bulgarian rose, Mysore sandalwood, French lavender)
  • Pesticide residue panel on request (for organic-positioned ranges)
  • Allergen-23 declaration for finished cosmetic product in EU markets
  • Organic-equivalent certificate (COSMOS, NOP, ECOCERT) for organic-positioned ranges
  • Sensory note from the perfumer on premium isolates (we provide this on Atlas Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Bacdanol, Patchouli, Frankincense)

The procurement workflow for spa / hospitality wellness programmes

  1. Lock the wellness narrative — what positioning is the spa or hotel chain selling?
  2. Pick 6–10 anchor oils — mix of premium (signature) and workhorse (volume-driver) grades
  3. Request 1 kg samples — paid, credit-back at bulk PI
  4. Run your own sensory + stability evaluation
  5. Lock annual contract on signature oils at premium grade; workhorse oils at standard tier
  6. Reserve 6-month capacity slot for seasonal-spike SKUs (lavender in summer, peppermint in winter, etc.)
Premium-positioning reality: the cost gap between premium-tier and workhorse-tier essential oils is usually 30–80%, sometimes 200%+ for rare oils. The right blend strategy uses premium for the signature 1–2 oils that define the wellness narrative, and workhorse for the supporting cast. This is how spa retail buyers typically balance margin vs positioning.
